Belle Raine is an Australian artist born in Byron Bay and currently living and working on Wangal and Gadigal land in Sydney, NSW.

Raine’s work is an investigation into material relationships as she seeks a language beyond the pictorial to express metaphysical ideas, emotional landscapes, memory, the nature of our reality and consciousness. Her work is influenced and informed by the innovations of Helen Frankenthaler and post-painterly abstraction.

Her process is material-led, often working on the floor or a table on raw canvas or linen and using vinyl acrylic paint as a stain, subject to chance and gravity, along with moments of intervention. Paint may be poured, splattered or brushed on, and in her latest body of work, applied via submersion of the material into a bath of highly diluted paint, thus giving the paint its own agency. Colours often merge on their own alchemic terms.

Raine’s images are immersive and tactile experiences that carry a sense of simmering quiet.
